News: Back to the Future the Musical to begin performances 20 August at the Adelphi

The highly anticipated Back to the Future the Musical has announced a new opening date for its West End run. Performances are set to begin at the Adelphi Theatre this summer, on 20 August.

The musical opened at Manchester Opera House in March 2020 to huge critical acclaim, but was cut short due to the closure of theatres after the pandemic hit.

Cast includes Roger Bart as Dr Emmett Brown, with Olly Dobson as Marty McFly, Hugh Coles as George McFly, Rosanna Hyland as Lorraine Baines, Cedric Neal as Goldie Wilson, Aidan Cutler as Biff Tannen, Courtney-Mae Briggs as Jennifer Parker, Will Haswell as Dave McFly, Emma Lloyd as Linda McFly and Mark Oxtoby as Strickland. 

Further casting includes Rhianne Alleyne, Amy Barker, Matt Barrow, Joshua Clemetson, Jamal Crawford, Bessy Ewa, Ryan Heenan, Cameron McAllister, Alessia McDermott, Laura Mullowney, Nic Myers, Shane O’Riordan, Katharine Pearson, Oliver Tester and Justin Thomas.

Back to the Future the Musical has book by Bob Gale, with new music and lyrics by Emmy and Grammy Award-winning Alan Silvestri and six-time Grammy Award-winning Glen Ballard. There will be additional songs from the film including Johnny B. Goode’s hugely popular “The Power of Love”. 

Marty McFly is a rock ‘n’ roll teenager who is accidentally transported back to 1955 in a time-travelling DeLorean invented by his friend, Dr Emmett Brown.  But before he can return to 1985, Marty must make sure his high school-aged parents fall in love in order to save his own existence.

The cast of the show will appear in a special performance on Comic Relief, which will air on BBC One on Friday 19 March. It will be a bespoke sketch created by Gale and has been directed by Richard Curtis.

Creative team includes  Tony Award-winning director John Rando (Urinetown, On The Town) and the multi-Tony and Olivier Award-winning design team of Tim Hatley (set and costume design), lighting design by Tim Lutkin, lighting consultant Hugh Vanstone, Gareth Owen (sound design) and Finn Ross (video design), with choreography by Chris Bailey, musical supervision and arrangements by Nick Finlow and illusions by Chris Fisher. Orchestrations are by Ethan Popp and Bryan Crook, with dance arrangements by David Chase. Casting is by David Grindrod Associates.
